Our friend Mat Honan experienced a monumental attack on his digital identity last week. He’s written extensively about it on his personal site and for Wired, and appears above in a clip from CNN.

The short story is, hackers were able to gain access to his accounts, not by guessing…

Google’s 2-factor authentication seems like a really important thing here (see mattcutts’ post-honan reco). The simple mantra of “something you know plus something you have” makes sense. Even basically switching from something you knowto something you have could help. Apparently the google authenticator app can be used with things besides gmail - there’s a wordpress plugin that uses it. Or there’s those OTP (one time password, not one true pairing) generators that you can get from paypal or verisign (or some banks).

I guess the problem with using OTP’s without a password that is that if someone knows what other accounts you have, and they can intercept your OTP, that OTP would be valid on any of your other accounts.

I was super skeptical of this app at first, but the concept is growing on me. I wonder if I’ll be able to start requiring these sorts of naming conventions from clients.
